Process Driven Learning
At Primary Colours we believe that Art is multi-faceted - it helps us make sense of the world. We use it to organise our thoughts, make plans, and decompress. It can communicate how we feel and involves processes we can learn from and apply in other areas of our life. Pretty much everything we use is the product of a creative process. Art makes life better.
Many of the classes begin with an Inquiry approach. That is, the students will play, discover, and share what it is they enjoy and want to learn more about. The course will develop from these wonderings. This approach to teaching is aligned with the Primary Colours philosophy.
The Primary Colours Philosophy
Art is fun
Creating Art needs to be fun to do. If it is not fun, it’s not going to happen. Can you think of any optional activities you do that are not fun? I can’t.
Art is learning
Art helps us make sense of the world. It helps us organise our thoughts and create solutions to concepts and challenges. Art can help us understand our own feelings as well as the perspective of others.
Art is communication
We express our feelings through Art even if what we are expressing is a desire to play with colours, shapes, or lines. Art can communicate big ideas and concepts. It can also be very intimate and personal.
Art is play
It is vital that time is given to experiment and play. Successful students are the ones that are able to take risks and challenge themselves. Ideas emerge from play.
Art is mindful
Art is not always relaxing, but it is great when it is. Many Art processes are repetitive and mindful in nature. Mindful tasks are not complicated but require a certain amount of focussed energy. When you finish a mindful activity you should feel calm and refreshed.

Art is freedom
Art has some rules, but they can be broken. Anything goes in Art. There is no right and no wrong. It's a safe space to explore and be yourself.

Art can be collaborative
Creating Art is quite often a solitary pursuit, but it doesn’t need to be. By collaborating you are able to achieve much more than you would be able to if you worked on your own. And you never know it, you might make a new friend.
